The appropriate level of simplicity in models

Here’s the first post about Environmental Modelling. Rather than something brand new, I’d like you to read a post from my research website. It discusses the value of simplicity in modelling. In many ways, modelling is about find the appropriate level of simplicity for a particular purpose. Sometimes complex models have the necessary level of simplicity. Einstein’s notion that models should be as simple as possible, but no simpler (for the purpose at hand), pretty much sums up the requirements of a good model. Of course, that is usually easier said than done.
